Last July, we reported that Samsung introduced its smart ring model, the Galaxy Ring. Following this development, Apple decided to cancel its plans for developing a smart ring. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman mentioned that the company made this decision based on the belief that smart rings could take over some functionalities of smartwatches, as reported.

Smart rings offer features such as health tracking and notification alerts, thanks to their lightweight and comfortable designs, making them a good alternative for those who do not use smartwatches. However, Apple considered that the potential for smart rings to be sold at lower prices might affect profitability.

As mentioned earlier, Samsung’s entrance into the smart ring market this year has sparked increased interest in this area. Initial sales of the Galaxy Ring performed better than expected, which could lead to heightened competition.

Apple had previously filed patents suggesting that smart rings could have functions to control other Apple devices. However, the cancellation of these ideas likely reinforces the company’s decision to focus on smartwatches.

Additionally, we reported last week that Apple withdrew from a last-minute funding round for OpenAI. These developments suggest that the company is reevaluating its strategy and priorities. However, it is expected that Apple will continue to invest in health and fitness tracking. For now, the Apple Watch series seems to remain the main focus in the wearable technology space.
