Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk unveiled the new fully autonomous Robovan prototype at the We, Robot event held in Los Angeles last night (Thursday). This electric and autonomous vehicle is designed to transport both people and goods in dense urban areas, with a capacity to carry 20 passengers.
During the presentation, Musk stated, “We will make the Robovan, and this is what it will look like,” but he did not provide any information regarding the vehicle’s pricing, production timeline, or when it will hit the market. The prototype features a retro-futuristic design, catching the eye with its silver metallic sides and sliding doors. As an autonomous vehicle, it does not have a steering wheel.
However, the unveiled Robovan is merely a prototype. Tesla aims to produce 20 million vehicles annually by 2030. Musk did not share any details about plans for new manufacturing facilities or upgrades to existing ones. Production of the Cybercab is expected to commence in 2026 or 2027.
While the Robovan is similar to other robotaxi designs, it stands out in terms of its size. A similar Robobus has also been developed in China.
