Increase in Local and Foreign Investors at Borsa Istanbul

According to the data compiled from the Central Registry Agency (MKK), the number of local investors at Borsa Istanbul has increased by 9% compared to December 2023, reaching 8,296,305, while the number of foreign investors has risen to 31,945.

Total Investor Count and Portfolio Growth

Since the beginning of the year, the total number of investors at Borsa Istanbul has also increased by 9%, reaching 8,328,250. The number of investors with portfolios worth 1 million lira and above has seen an approximately 30% increase in the first five months of the year, totaling 243,254 individuals.

Portfolio Value Increase by May

As of the end of May, the total portfolio value of all investors has increased by 41% compared to the end of last year, reaching 5 trillion 849 billion 412 million lira. The share of local investors in this portfolio value is 3 trillion 564 billion 599 million lira, which constitutes 61% of the total. Meanwhile, foreign investors hold about 39% of the total portfolio value.

Growth in High-Value Portfolios

In the first five months of 2024, the number of local investors with portfolios worth 1 million lira and above increased by 31%, reaching 240,031. The total portfolio value of these local investors also rose by 41% at the end of May, reaching 3 trillion 71 billion 13 million lira. Notably, individuals with portfolios of 1 million and above, representing 2.9% of local investors, hold 86.2% of the total portfolio value of local investors.

Demographic Changes Among Investors

In the first five months of 2024, there was a 9% increase in the number of investors compared to the end of 2023. The largest group of investors comprises those aged 30-34, totaling 1,186,756 individuals, while the most significant change in the number of investors was observed in the 0-14 age group, which increased by 26%.

Age Group Analysis

As of December 2023, there were a total of 76,946 investors in the 0-14 age group; this number rose to 96,629 by May, marking a 26% increase. An analysis of investors by age shows that those aged 45-49 hold the largest portfolio value at 293 billion 227 million lira, while the 15-19 age group has the lowest portfolio value at 3 billion 241 million lira.

Investment Trends in Borsa Istanbul

When assessed, local investors with the highest portfolio value are also in the 45-49 age group, totaling 292 billion 340 million lira. The greatest change in portfolio value in the first five months of the year occurred in the 70-74 age group, with a 49% increase.

Most Popular Investment Index

When examining the data by index, it is noteworthy that local investors have seen a portfolio growth across all calculated indices. Analysts report that the BIST 100 index has recorded an increase of over 40% since the beginning of the year, indicating that the rise in portfolio sizes may largely result from increasing share prices.

Sector-Specific Investment Growth

During the first five months of 2024, local investors’ portfolio value in the banking sector saw the largest increase, growing by 61% to reach 612 billion 512 million lira. This was followed by a 48% increase in the financial index and a 44% rise in the corporate governance index. The industrial index showed the lowest change with a 20% increase, with a portfolio value of 1 trillion 115 billion 243 million lira.

Comparison with Previous Month

In April, the portfolio value in the industrial index increased by approximately 16%, while the number of investors in this index fell by 2.4%. During the first five months of 2024, local investors invested 2 trillion 424 billion 897 million lira, while foreign investors contributed 1 trillion 536 billion 61 million lira, primarily in the BIST 100 index.
