Elon Musk announced on the social media platform X that a new API has been introduced that opens xAI’s Grok models to developers. This API allows third-party developers to build applications and features leveraging xAI’s Grok language models.
The API includes the latest multimodal language models from xAI, Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini. These models can perform various tasks such as text and code generation and content summarization, while also being capable of producing visuals using Black Forest Labs’ Flux.1 diffusion model. Additionally, the API can interact with external tools to accomplish real-world tasks, offering functionalities like accessing IoT devices or pulling live data.
Currently, the API only offers a model known as “grok-beta.” Developers may encounter various bugs with this beta version, as the platform is still in beta phase.
xAI aims to compete with rivals like OpenAI through this API. The pricing for Grok-beta is notably higher when compared to OpenAI: it charges $5 for one million input tokens and $15 for output tokens. These prices are more expensive than those for OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. However, xAI’s models promise a broad range of use cases with unique features such as visual content generation and interaction with external databases.
The xAI API presents new opportunities for developers while aligning with Musk’s objective to strengthen his position in the AI landscape. Over time, it will become clear how much the API develops and how widely it is adopted and utilized by developers.
The API can be tested here.
