Among the world’s largest 11 chip manufacturers, AMD and Intel have joined forces under the new x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group to strengthen their position against competitor ARM. As the name suggests, the advisory group focuses on Intel’s x86 microprocessor architecture.

Other members of the x86 Advisory Group include Microsoft, Google, Meta, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo, Broadcom, Dell, and Oracle. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, and Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, are also among the members.

According to shared information, the goal of the advisory group is to enhance compatibility, predictability, and consistency among x86 product offerings. As part of its plans, the advisory group will seek input from x86 hardware and software developers. Furthermore, the organization will support the standardization of interfaces in the product lines of AMD and Intel by creating simplified architectural guidelines.

Although this new structure aims to promote the x86 ecosystem, it is worth noting that ARM’s architecture has been steadily preferred by technology giants. Apple made a complete transition from Intel chips to ARM-based Apple Silicon chips in the middle of last year. Qualcomm has also demonstrated that it can produce a strong ARM chip for Windows machines with its Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus. Moreover, compared to x86, ARM allows licensing companies to adapt the architecture to their specific needs more easily.
