Last year, we reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Worldcoin received a $115 million investment and was launched shortly after. The company focuses on developing a blockchain-based identity verification system centered around iris scanning, and this week, during an event, it introduced the new version of its biometric imaging device, the Orb, while also announcing a change in its brand identity. Worldcoin has announced that it has changed its name and will now operate under the World brand.

So far, the company has been using the Orb, which scans people’s eyes, to determine whether a user is a bot or a human. The company’s newly introduced Orb will also be used for identity verification services. Initially appearing dystopian, the company is gaining more importance in this climate where AI-generated deepfakes are becoming increasingly convincing.

In a statement, the company expressed:

“Humanity now faces a new existential question: How will humans and artificial intelligence coexist?”

World is led by co-founder and CEO Alex Blania. The company announced that the new model of the Orb will utilize Nvidia Corp’s Jetson chipset, enhancing the Orb’s AI performance by five times. This improvement will allow for even faster and smoother human verifications. World will also offer a delivery service for individuals’ real-time identity verification needs, bringing the device right to their homes.

According to Chief Device Officer Rich Heley, the Orb delivery will be similar to ordering a pizza. The company stated that its identity verification service, called Deep Face, will address the issue of AI fraud. The company claims that World will offer a strong and novel solution to combat fraud. Additionally, it announced that everyone attending the event will receive a free Orb.
