We are seeing Earth collapsing” – André Trigueiro

Coverage of Rio-92 – the United Nations Conference on Environment – changed the career of journalist André Trigueiro, who was then a reporter for the radio station JB/AM.

In this episode of The Business of Life, Trigueiro reveals that he felt “anxious” when he realized the magnitude of the environmental problem that needed to be addressed – and how little space the issue had in the media.

“I saw that we were immersed in a predatory culture and there was no time to lose,” he told Rabbi Nilton Bonder. He decided to specialize in the field, but gradually “carved out space” in traditional coverage. “They said it wouldn’t be good for my career to focus on the environment.”

When JB/AM radio closed in 1993, Trigueiro was hired by Globo and later moved to GloboNews, where he was a reporter and anchor for Jornal das Dez for 16 years. In 2006, he launched the program Cidades e Soluções, which he still hosts today.

He also took courses in the field – earning a postgraduate degree in environmental management – started giving lectures, wrote seven books on the subject, and created a journalism environmental course at PUC-Rio.

Bonder recalls that despite his specialization and transition to a commentator, Trigueiro maintains the routine of a reporter. “I have my opinion, but out of respect for the viewer, I prefer to report facts.”

The journalist says he “would like to be alive” to see the world overcome denialism – which is not just denying science, but avoiding taking action to solve problems. “We are in a critical situation. We are seeing the Earth collapse.”
