Recently, YouTube has introduced features like Communities and Hype to support content creators, and now it has decided to extend the duration of Shorts content. Previously limited to 1 minute, YouTube Shorts videos will now be extended to 3 minutes. This change will take effect from October 15 and will apply to all Shorts content, both square and vertical.
Additionally, the company will allow users to capture clips from YouTube through the Shorts camera and create remix clips. Shorts users will be able to select “Use this template” after tapping the “Remix” option on a Short to create their own videos. It’s worth noting that YouTube first released the remix feature in early 2024.
If Shorts content doesn’t interest you, YouTube is offering a tool that will show fewer Shorts. You can access this option through the three-dot menu in the upper right corner. However, according to YouTube, this option will only be available for a limited time.
The new update will also change how comments on Shorts streams are previewed. YouTube’s new Shorts player makes the appearance of these short videos more organized. As a result, creators’ content stands out prominently in the user interface. Furthermore, interaction buttons like comments and shares on the right side of the screen have been transformed into framed icons, allowing viewers to see more of the video. In addition, the creator’s name, content description, and audio information will be presented in a more compact format at the bottom of the screen, causing the video description to be truncated; users will need to click the “more” button to read the full text.
Lastly, a new page will be introduced for mobile Shorts content, allowing users to discover popular trends in their own countries. With this page, YouTube sets itself apart from TikTok, which only offers personalized content and search options. Nevertheless, considering all these updates, it is fair to say that YouTube is challenging TikTok, which has shifted towards long-form vertical content in recent years.
