Xscape Photonics, a company developing laser technology for connecting chips in data centers, has secured a $44 million investment. The funding round, known as Series A, was led by IAG Capital Partners. The financing included participation from major firms such as Cisco Systems, Nvidia, Altair Engineering, Fathom Fund, Kyra Ventures, LifeX, and OUP.
The company announced that it will use the new capital to develop and scale production of its laser-based LabriX data center connectivity technology.
Founded in 2022 by Alexander Gaeta, Vivek Raghunathan, and Yoshi Okawachi, Xscape Photonics is creating innovative technology for connecting chips in data centers. Specifically, it focuses on establishing laser-based connections that facilitate faster and more efficient communication between chips such as graphics processing units (GPUs). This technology can transmit more data while consuming less energy, thus aiming to support large-scale data operations more effectively.
Xscape Photonics utilizes a technology called silicon photonics to develop systems that transmit data through the manipulation of light. This approach offers solutions that consume less energy and produce less heat compared to traditional metal wire connections. The company aims to enhance overall performance by enabling more efficient communication between chips in data centers with these laser-based connections.
Due to the limited bandwidth of existing connections, only a fraction of a chip’s potential can be utilized. Xscape Photonics’ laser-based connections aim to overcome this challenge by carrying more data.
